“Design Without Designers” I found to be informative. It makes sense to me that some companies don’t use designers in their products. You can tell this by how little thought that they place on the “user experience” of their finished product. This is a mistake that no real designer would make. From an engineering point of view it is a finished product because it works. Like Norman stated in last week’s video “we conform to our technology instead of our technology conforming to us”. I also liked his: “Data driven design is hill climbing” illustration. It really brings out the complexity of figuring out when a product or solution is at its peak performance. I imagine there comes a time when something can’t be improved upon anymore… but how do you determine when you have reached that point?

I must admit that I choose this essay simply for the title of it. After all, how can you have design without designers? In the end you can’t. This essay was well worth reading. It brings forth an insider’s perspective into some of the challenges of designing. It’s really thought provoking to see how different companies view’s designing. This essay gives some considerations to any who are seriously considering any type of design as a career.
